Black and White color combination has often had quite bad reputation especially in interior decorating. But if you see the bedroom designs and living room designs below you would agree that black along with little white color combination around it makes the bedroom designs, living room designs or for that matter bathroom designs very chic and stylish along with adding the lavish factor. Of course it should be carefully used in right doses. In modern interior design it also comes hand by hand with white in order to generate cool contrasts. Black could also go well with other light colors like yellow or blue but for the classic lavish and bold look there could be nothing better than white.

Of course as mentioned above also that the black and white color would make your bedroom designs stand out only if it is used in the right proportions, looking at the below first image can prove this to you. Only the wall behind the bed in the bedroom is painted jet black and then the entire flooring is done in black tiles. This use of the black makes the entire bedroom stand out. This is the use of the black, and the white color has been nicely gelled into by making use of the small piece bedroom furniture like the side table having white plywood over it and a small bedroom cupboard or dressing table in full white adding to the smart black and white look of the entire bedroom.

Even in the second image the use of black and white has been done very smartly. The use of the black wall along with the white panels above the bed is awesome. It is simple and the only black and white element in the entire bedroom but it still creates a vibrant and very smart effect along with the other colors like lavender and blue. Bedroom designs can be altered in a lot of way by adding new bedroom furniture and all but the best effect of a lavish or luxurious bedroom comes with the right selection of colors in the room which totally depends on your taste.

When decorating a teen boy’s bedroom the decor you decide upon will depend on the teen in question. But there are a number of different ideas that you can explore and these bedroom decorating ideas for a teenage boys space will hopefully produce a room that they will enjoy.

Color

It is a good idea to paint the walls of your teen’s room in deep or vibrant colours (such as purple or blue) and then use lighter coloured furniture which will provide accent to the walls.

Wall Art and Shelving

Normally the wall art you should be looking for to decorate a teen boy’s room is murals with a sports theme or motor sport theme. Look at very modern shelving in order to display any trophies that they may have on them.

Bedding
When choosing the bedding for your teen boys bedroom is to go with the flow and use that which links in to the overall theme of the room.

For example if you teens room is based on a surf theme then you could paint the walls in an ocean blue colour and then cover them with surf and surfer murals. There are plenty of places where you can purchase bedding that will perfectly match the theme that they have.

Or why not go for a solid colour theme to the room and use other colours in small amounts which will enhance the overall design of the room.

Study Area

When decorating your teen’s bedroom include an area for them to study. Each teen will have a different way in which they study and there are many types of different tables available which will suit your particular teens study needs.

Lastly but by no most least when you are looking at bedroom decorating ideas for teenage boys then you should wherever possible involve them in the whole process. You should allow them to have a say as to what colours, theme and designs they want included in the decorating as well as what kind of furniture they would like to have.

7 Ways to Add Sensory Beauty To Your Home

Simple and easy ways to scenting your home!

7 Ways to Add Sensory Beauty To Your Home

Adding various methods to scent your home or office or even car is so soothing and relaxing to the senses, There are a myriad of methods to accomplish this, so today we'll be exploring a few.

1. Carpet Freshener - Very easy to make your own, take about a pound of pure baking soda and mix to it a few drops of essential oil or fragrance oil and blend it up in a food processor. Then pour this out on a shallow tray to allow to dry for a couple of hours, stirring occasionally. After this has dried, put in an airtight container.

This carpet freshener can either be sprinkled on your carpets directly, left a few minutes and vacuumed up, or simply put some in your vacuum cleaner bag and you'll get scent as you vacuum your carpets.

2. Simmer a scent by taking a saucepan on your stove and adding apple cider, cinnamon sticks, cloves & some orange peel. Simply let this simmer on low, adding small amounts of water as necessary so it doesn't run dry. This is a very homey, comforting scent that's so easy to do.

3. Try scenting a centerpiece. Here's an idea, bake a fresh bundt cake then take a small jar and fill it with fragrant flowers and then set this small jar of flowers in the center of the bundt cake. Experiment with different scent combinations. Lemon is beautiful with honeysuckle for example.

4. Perfume your pillows. Either by lightly misting with your favorite perfume, although be sure to test color fastness first on a hidden out of the way area to make sure it won't ruin the fabric. You can also use a purchased linen spray for the same purpose and is safer for the fabric in general. Another way to scent the pillow is to insert a small amount of potpourri inside a small sachet bag and either pin it to the side of the pillow, or insert it into the pillow case.

5. Scent your linen drawer or closet by tucking dried sprigs of lavender in between the layers of towels and sheets. You can also tuck them near the sides of the linens directly in the closet. Lavender not only provides a soothing, calming scent to those linens, but also works as a moth and insect repellant as well.

6. Scent seashells for your bathroom. If they are small shells, simply soak the shells for a few minutes in olive oil with a few drops of essential oil. For larger shells, add a few drops of essential oil right into the middle of the shells. Then set the shells on some type of decorative tray or basket in your bathroom or bedside table for a sight & smell treat.

7. Scented powder puff. Get some of your favorite scented powder, or even baby powder if that's your preference. Get one of those luxurious powder puffs, and take a long bubble bath. After the bath, pamper yourself with these beautifully scented powders applied with the soft powder puffs. The scent stays with you a long time and is one of those small ways to feel truly pampered and distressed.

Beautiful scents can be so calming in today's rushed, stressed filled lives. Finding ways to incorporate different scents, textures, sights & sounds can truly help relax and remind us to slow down and to enjoy life. Sometimes these simple things help us to refocus and not stress so much about those things we cannot change.

Check This Out : Another Fun Print

To add to our small collection of bicycle themed art, I bought this yesterday.

My hubby, the cycling fanatic and twitter extraordinaire , sent me a tweet link to this print. With the power of Paypal, it is ordered.

Can't wait to add it to this:

I have plans for a gallery wall that is dedicated to bicycles in our family room. I am slowly collecting art and photographs.

Here is a photo I took while thrifting with Carol from The Design Pages and with the power of Picnik I now have this:

On a side note, not bicycle related...

School is finally out and last night my husband and I put the three kids on a plane to visit their grandparents on their 350 acre farm.

Kid free for a WEEK!
{party in the house}
So today I am painting...

And getting ready for the long weekend!

A New Garden Favorite

Not a new veggie .. just new to our family.  Kale is growing in abundance in our garden; getting picked sometimes twice a day.  I never knew how good it could taste .. and only associated it with the curly variety used as a food prop to pretty up restaurant plates.  I can think of many uses for this hardy green .. such as used in soups, stir-fries, sauteed  ... and even as a delicious topping on homemade pizza (which we've baked up twice this week).

About ready to be picked are our June strawberries .. they're just turning red and have been covered to keep the birds from having a field day.  Lettuce is growing and filling salad bowls .. along with radishes .. which have only had some success.   Some of our onions are not doing well .. and am not sure why .. could be from planting in the raised beds .. as we've never had problems other than them going missing from voles.  Speaking of the pesky creatures, here is a good link on trapping them   .  Looks easy enough to make the trap devices at home .. and will try it later this week.  So far I haven't noticed too much missing from the garden .. and I know the voles are out there.  Our raised beds lined with hardware cloth seem to be working.

Types of Wood Used to Make Furniture

Have you taken an interest to wood furniture lately? Here are some basics you should know.

Article taken off ehow.com

Types of Wood Used to Make Furniture

Wood types are usually categorized as hard wood or soft wood. Typically, soft wood comes from evergreens, or trees with pine needles, and hard wood is from trees with broad leaves. Most often, hard wood is used for making furniture as it has higher durability, although soft wood is becoming more popular for furniture making.

Open-Pore Wood
Some woods have small holes, called open pores. These pores give the wood a distinctive texture. When finishing woods with open pores, stains can accumulate in the pores making those areas seem darker. Some open-pore woods are ash, oak and walnut.

Tight-Grained Wood
Cherry, maple and alder are types of tight-grained wood. These wood types have a tighter grain, are smooth to the touch and take stain well.

Red Wood
Cherry and mahogany woods will lend a red-colored quality to your furniture. Cherry is less expensive than mahogany.
Insect Resistant
Teak is good for furniture making if you are looking to craft for outdoor purposes. Teak has a natural oil that repels insects and water. Cedar is known to also repel insects.

Easy-Crafting Wood
Soft wood such as pine is typically easier to work with. Pine also holds up to humidity better than many other woods. Cedar is a soft wood that is also easy to craft.

Exotic Wood
Lacewood from Australia is often used for accents. Granadillo from southern Mexico can be used for all furniture crafts. African mahogany from Ghana can be used to make any type of furniture.

Re-painting Again

After moving my daughter into her current bedroom during the Great Switch, we painted the room the same lavender-gray, African Violet by Benjamin Moore, she had in her previous space. Her previous room was north facing with not a lot of natural light so the colour was quite muted. In her current room, we find the lavender really comes out with all the light that filters in. The walls especially read "purple" since we hung up the Roman blind. She really likes the vintagey look we are going for with her turquoise end table and diamond tufted headboard. The fabric we chose isnt working with the current wall colour so we will be re-painting again.

Fabrics:

The bottom fabric.

This photo is our inspiration for her back wall:

So while the kids are off visiting their grandparents farm, I will be painting up a storm!
