You Can't Always 'Trust' Thrift Tags

vintage white 'hobnail' bedspread

It pays to be patient when 'thrifting' :)
Today was 'date' day with Mr. Mac.  We were supposed to go to the hardware store (hey, it's raining;) but decided to stop at a few thrift stores on the way.  My favorite hangout was having half off the entire store .. so that was the first stop.  A few more USA made vintage diner pieces were picked up (plates and bowls @ 2 for 25 cents and 2 for 50 cents :) .. afterward we ventured to the Goodwill and I spied a hobnail (double) white bedspread.  Impressed, I checked the tag .. it read 'Dog Blanket' .. $1.99.  What?  I had stumbled on a rack of older bedspreads that the store thought would make good pet bedding.  Well, I checked the bedspread over pretty well (no fleas;) .. just a few small surface stains near the top edge.  After treating the spots and adding a smidgen of bleach with the blanket in the washing machine .. viola .. a perfectly good spot free bedspread .. with just a few minor snags.  A similar spread was priced at $58 when this bed was added to our guest room.  What do you think?  Is it a keeper?

Slate Slabs for a Wonderful Slate Roofing

Things that are around us by default are taken as granted and the same goes with the roofing of a house. Have you ever thought that what goes in for making a unique, strong and wonderful roof. Although there are many modern material but the slate roofing is wonderful in terms of its durability, water resistance and protection from Sunlight.

Roof of any house has three main purposes. Number one being the shelter. It protects individuals from Sunlight, rain, storm and other such natural ailments. Secondly roof is meant for insulation. Roof cuts down the exchange of heat and cold of house with the exterior world. This in turn helps the individuals to live more healthy life as they will not fall sick so often. In modern roofing special techniques of insulation are provided and for this paper, foam, plastic and other such materials are used. Roof also serves the architectural purpose of house or building.

Coming to the material for roofing then slate slab or slate tiles are the remarkable choice as these are very durable and look so elegant. Most of the old buildings like churches and monuments has used the slate stone for roofing and other purposes and till date these are intact without much damage. Some of these are even five and more century old. At the same time slate is an eco friendly option as this is a natural stone and does not cause any harm to the environment.

Advantages of Slate Slabs
It is a very tough stone that is durable than any other available stone. It lasts for centuries and good in every kind of environment.

Slate also has a very distinctive appeal as it has different texture and color. The look for slate stone is different from different angles as the surface reflects Sunlight differently.

There different but very beautiful colors available in slate stone. You can get slate slab and tiles from pink, gray, black, red to green, golden and more. So you can give your home a style with the slate slabs.

If the slate stone is installed properly and professionally then the roof is 100% water-resistant and leak free.

Slate is a non-combustible stone that is makes it perfect for roofing. Also the extreme heat does not cause any harm to the slate roof.

This roof does not need any grand scale maintenance.

~A Diamond Tufted Headboard: The Reveal~

This day is long overdue, after starting my daughter's room re-design wa-a-a-a-a-y back in June,

I am finally finished the headboard!

I  could blame my husband for the delay, as I was waiting for him to help me cut out the headboard shape, but two weeks ago with the sun shining I decided to bite the bullet and fire up the jig saw.

It took some courage to start up the jig saw, I have a fear of lightening fast moving sharp blades with the power to cut off appendages.

I am happy to say that all my fingers are intact and now I can show you the results of all my hard work.

The headboard has been finished for over a week but I was patiently waiting for the sun to shine. Photographing on the "wet" coast is a challenge as our sunny days are limited.

Without further adieu......

May I present:

{A diamond tufted headboard}

Made with a luxurious polyester silk in raspberry.
(No matter how much I tweaked the photo- the colour shows redder than it really is)

Made with LOVE {and blood, sweat and tears}.

Made in Canada {not China}

Made for a wonderful 16 year old.

{Total cost: $55 }

Wood: free
Foam: $30
Batting: $10
Fabric: $5
Buttons: $5
Thread: $5

Not bad...

Come back Monday when I will post the tutorial {its a long one}

If Ever ...

my stove stops working completely, I'd search high and low for something like this .. then do a little remodel in the kitchen area to make a free standing wood cook stove fit in.  Of course, then I'd need a summer kitchen on a closed in porch for cooking when it's warm outside ... canning day would not require an apology for such a mess in the kitchen should company drop by :) ... you've read the story, "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie" .. or .. " ...a Duck a Doughnut .. or ... Moose a Muffin" ... one thing leads to another.

Tips to Install Slate Wall Fountain

Slate wall fountain are exceptional in beauty and appeal. Also with this, create an atmosphere of serenity and calmness with the flowing water that is considered good according to popular feng shui art.

Installing the wall fountain is easy but needs two people for easy work. Before proceeding for slate fountain mounting, it is advisable to mount the electrical outlet in the wall and make sure that it is behind the place where you are going to put the slate fountain. Although this is not imperative but putting electrical fitting there would remove the chaos of wires and the fountain will look more beautiful.

Tips to Install Slate Wall Fountain
  • Get the items out of packing box and place these on the floor in the same order as you need them on the wall. This will help you in installing the correct block at correct place thus will save your time.
  • The place where you want to install slate wall fountain must have a GFI Electrical outlet. Place this behind the slate and approximately 18 inches above the lower tray of the fountain. And it should be 24 inches lower than the metal hood that is present at the top of the fountain. And if you have 2 or more than 2 slate fountain then place the electrical outlet behind the left most slate (face the wall and check your left).
  • Also give it a wall switch so that you can easily turn it off and on.
  • In order to control halogen lights and water flow separately, install additional clock box outlet and also place this at the back of fountain. You will then have to install double wall switch one for the water and other for halogen lights.
  • Mark the place so that the installation is straight and not tilted to one or other side.
  • Use installation brackets at place where you want to hang the fountain. You must mark these places before drilling for the bracket points. Every slate wall fountain has its specific requirement of installation. So better to read these instructions before hand.
  • In certain cases there is a need to secure water distribution unit at the top of the fountain. Make sure that water flow is even and covers the entire surface. After installing the water unit properly clean it.
  • Keep in mind to submerge the pump completely in water for its proper working and try to use distilled water for this purpose.

The Homemakers Movement

I have been so pleased in recent months to see the number of women making their way .. or deciding from the get-go to be keepers at home.  With that said, there are still areas in my own home that need work.

Organic Fruit Snack (barely touched while I was away)!
Earlier this month I was gone for nearly four days.  While I was pleased to have the family step up and take care of our youngest (disabled) child, it came at a cost meal wise.  Without my influence let's just say that highly processed foods were consumed.  It would have been best to have had some home made freezer meals available (that was not the case) .. and my family saw this as an 'opportunity' to eat junk.  I must continually teach my family about the importance of good quality food.  When 'mom' is gone, no one seems to care or make the effort to prepare nutritious meals.  More work and training needs to take place about the benefits of good nutrition, and ... yes, while junk food may not harm you if eaten every so often, I need to bridge the 'GAP' (or gape) in my family's food choices when I'm away.

Tonight there is a sporting event on TV (don't ask ... because I don't remember;) ... pizza seems to be the food of choice.  With plenty of fresh tomatoes available, it will be homemade and healthier than from a pizzeria or the frozen food isle.

A homemakers job is vital to the well being and health of her/his family.

Build Slate Patio in Easy Steps

Patio is a wonderful place in home that gives home a freshness and a space. You can have a fun family time there so make it as presentable and comfortable as possible. Do not use the stone and accessories that needs very frequent and regular maintenance. In spite of this you can use hard and sturdy stones for flooring that is very easy to maintain. Exceptionally well and water acid resistant slate stone is the remarkable choice for this.
Material Required for Slate Patio

  • Sand
  • Slate tiles
  • Stamper
  • Shovel
  • Spade
  • Level
  • Measuring tape
  • String
  • Stakes
  • Wood: 8-feet long and 2-inches thick
  • Landscaper's fabric
  • Saw
  • Hammer
  • Nails
Steps to Build Slate Patio
First of all you will have to select the area where you want to install the slate stone. Clear this part from weeds, rocks, debris and other unwanted material.

Measure the area and check out how many slate tiles are required to cover the said part.

Take spade and loosen the soil. Plough at least 4 inches deep soil and tamp down the soil after this.

Use leveler to level the soil. Leveling is very important part so do it properly.

Again make the excavated area wet with water and tamp it further down and then lay landscaper's fabric above that.

To create a perimeter frame, screw the boards together to make a perimeter frame and set this frame right onto place. Make sure to level it perfectly.

Mix the inside loosen soil with sand. Put about 3 in of sand inside and then compact it with the help of hand tamper. Hand tamper has a long handle and a flat metal base that is used for tamping. You can get this on rent that is somewhere between $8 to $10 per day.

Take the lumber and nail them together and place this form on excavated area. Make sure that lumber form is placed correctly on the excavated area and it is leveled properly. This completes the groundwork.

Take rubber spacers and slate tiles and start from the corner. If you have made the border then leave the border space and start from the actual patio are.

First put some grout on the bottom and use leveler to level it. Lay the slate tile and place rubber space and then another slate tile. In this way lay all the tiles. Now do the same thing with border tiles. Keep the space between tiles even as this will enhance the overall look.

Add grout in the spaces between the tiles. Do this properly. Do not wipe any excessive grout over the tile after this but let it dry. It will take a day or so for drying.

Replacing Dinner Plates

Beware of Cabella's dinnerware
I'm on a roll with rants about junk products.  You have to walk through a mine field when purchasing anything these days.  Three years ago my folks gave us a nice service of stoneware dishes, purchased no less at the high end outfitter store Cabellas. While the dishes themselves seem to perform well enough in the oven/microwave/dishwasher, the moose images have just about been scraped off from occasional use.  These were never used every day.  As you can see, the picture is from a salad plate.  Needless to say, I have stopped using them for fear we have been ingesting lead paint.  The plates were made in China.  Several wildlife themed coffee mugs purchased from Cabellas should have been marked 'for decoration purposes only' ... and who would buy them knowing that?  Seems the mugs were coated with a shellac type finish so the image wouldn't rub off.  These were marked 'not dishwasher safe' ... now I know why .. tell that to kids that don't read the fine print.

Of late I've been picking up vintage odds and end pieces of Homer Laughlin, Shenango, Syracuse and various other dish brands made in the USA that once graced diners and private homes.
Homer Laughlin & Shenango

I rather like the look of mix and match .. and at 25 & 50 cents to $1 a plate on days the thrift stores give a 50% discount, you can't beat the price.
Homer Laughlin

My favorite plates are the oval diner plates made of vitreous china (the same durable product sinks and toilets are made from;).

Jackson China, hotel supply, Portland, Oregon

They are great to heat up before use to keep the food nice and warm.

I think it's time to pay Cabella's a visit to see about getting a refund.  Buyer beware!

~Friday~

I don't have anything to show you yet.

I know, I am such a tease :)

You have no idea how long it takes to write up a tutorial for a diamond tufted headboard! Between teaching, my family and life, I am lucky if I can sit down to the computer to read my favourite blogs let alone write on mine.

 Back to the headboard....
Mistakes were made along the way and I have a new found appreciation for upholsterers. Lets just say that blood (yes-blood - exacto knives are sharp!), sweat and tears were shed while making the headboard. The end result was worth it and I am going to tackle another one next week for my other daughter.

Having the headboard done has brought back new-found energy to tackle finishing the eldest's room. I am off to Ikea (a great place for those with limited budgets) next week and plan on hacking this:

for her room.

I am also replacing her shelves with these:

and maybe making drapes with this fabric:

all photos:: Ikea

So fingers are crossed that between my grandma's memorial, soccer games, hockey games, homework, raking leaves, Starbuck's with the hubby, walks with the dog, helping the middle daughter shower with a cast (that's another story), sleeping, etc., I can finally finish my tutorial and reveal the long-awaited headboard!

Have a fantastic weekend!

Junk Products

Since building our home in 2007, I have been very disappointed in some of the kitchen appliances.  We did not buy cheap .. but middle of the road quality/price.  To date, my microwave, dishwasher, and fridge have all needed some repairs.  Even the range, which had an electronic starter go on the fritz has been worked on.  Our high efficiency washing machine purchased in 2004 was replaced in 2006 with a less high tech model that uses more water and has no electronic brain.  I'm not sure the dishwasher will get replaced anytime soon should it completely go kaput; I can envision a nice calico curtain on a rod with storage shelves for my cast iron pans in this space.  Product quality seems to have been replaced with customer no-service ..  or at the least ... expensive repair bills (or extra insurance policies) that are about half the original cost of the product.  We need to re-invent quality USA made products instead of importing junk.  How did our country come so far as to send a man to the moon ... and yet have such poorly made foreign products for sale .. and a HUGE percent of the population out of work?  Government manipulation, big unions, and a less than united front in the workforce have contributed to this demise.  My pocketbook has been emptied .. but no more.  This same trend has not been just for large ticket items.  I have had countless small appliances (shall I mention coffee makers) that have stopped working just as the warranty expired.  Next up will be my rant about dinner plates!

Maintaining The Damask Table Linens

Table linens are every homemakers favorite. The table linens tend to enhance the grace of the regular tables etc. to a great extent. Though, the maintenance of these fabrics call for a lot of care and attention. Specially the damask or plain white linen. Even the minutest of stain is enough for spoiling the grace of the coveted damask linens. Mentioned below are few tips which can come handy while cleaning white linens or damask table linens.

For Red Wine
To remove a red wine stain, you would need to soak the stain in cool water first and pretreat it with a liquid laundry detergent or stain remover. Lastly, cleanse it using a fabric-safe bleach.

For Gravy
To remove a stain of gravy, you would need to pretreat or soak the stain into an enzymes containing product. In case its a dry stain, you would have to soak it for around half an hour. Launder it as the way you generally do and make sure that you don't machine dry it until the stain is removed.

For Butter
For a butter stain on table cloth or tray cloth etc. you would have to use the hottest water which is safe for the fabric but before that pretreat it using specifically a prewash stain remover or a liquid laundry detergent.

For Candle Wax
First of all you would have to scrape off the wax from the linen using a dull knife. In case the wax is still stuck onto the fabric fibers, put the linen in between the white paper towels and then press it using a warm iron, the paper towels would end up absorbing the wax.

If enough attention is given to the maintenance of table linens, they can indeed last for a long period of time. Proper storing and washing of linens would duly reap its benefit with linens being as fresh as new!

Recliner Chairs: The Comfort of Stretching

A recliner chair refers to the chair whose back can be can be rolled and at the same time, foot can be raised so as to provide utmost comfort to the person sitting on it. It is an a comfort chair which can be easily traced in modern homes given the luxury and comfort people look for. The variety of recliner chair depends upon the varied reclining capacity of the chair. Mentioned here are the three major types of recliner chairs available in the market. Check them out:

Recliner chair with double reclines
Recliner chair with double reclines are the ones which shift only till a 45 degree angle and then swipe back to its normal position. These are quite comfortable for relaxing and while reading. Though one cannot manage to sleep on these kind of recliner chairs as they become extremely uncomfortable for that purpose. recliner chairs with double reclines are generally the cheapest of all recliners as unlike other recliner chairs, these do not incorporate any extra mechanism to it.

Turn Down The Heat

With the temperature and PSI levels rising, it's no wonder I'm sweating buckets just standing at the bus stop. Respite from the heat is definitely needed.

How to Make Your Home Cooler During the Summer

Keeping your home cool during the summer can be quite difficult. Follow the steps below to help cool your home.

1. If the weather is not too warm, open the windows to let cool air inside. Make sure to open several windows to allow the air to blow in one window and out the other, creating a breeze.

2. Fans make a room feel cooler. You can use a ceiling fan, a portable fan, or any other fan.

3. Add an air conditioner. You can add a central air conditioning system or a window unit. If you already have a central air conditioner that is not working well, have it serviced to check the coolant levels and whether there are any leaks.

4. Create shade on your home, especially your windows. You can plant a tree to create shade, add an awning or pergola, add solar screens, or add window film. Consider replacing old windows with more energy efficient ones.

5. Make sure your home is well insulated and air tight so the hot air does not get in. Use spray insulation to fill any air gaps. Consider getting your attic roof sprayed with insulating paint. Make sure there are adequate air vents in your attic to let the hot air out.

How To Get Rid of Moss In Your Backyard

Unless you're going for a rustic backyard look, you'll probably not welcome any moss around. It's easy to control moss if you know how.

Article taken off ehow.com

How To Get Rid of Moss

Despite the soft green visual appeal of moss, it is technically a weed. Moss is not aggressive enough to kill your turf, but it will claim unused space and spread if allowed. Yards that have drainage problems or poor soil are prime targets for moss. Like algae, moss is controllable with special soaps and treatments. After you eradicate the moss, take measures to prevent the return of the uninvited guest by making changes to soil and its ability to receive sunlight.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:
Hedge clippers
Branch pruners
Moss control product
Pump and hose
Garden rake
Spade
Lime
Grass seed
Water

1.Trim back overhead branches that may be blocking sunlight from making it to the ground. Trim back hedges, trees and bushes to allow sunlight to filter through.

2. Spray the moss with a moss control product. This product should contain some type of fungicide. Buy a premixed container that has a hose attachment. Alternatively, for large moss problems you should buy granules and mix them with water in a large pump with a hose for dispensing. Spray the moss during late winter or early in the spring. Allow the product to sit overnight before continuing.

3. Rake the dead moss up. Use a sturdy garden rake to scrap up the clumps of dead moss.

4. Break up the soil with a spade. Make soil corrections now. Moss thrives in soil with low pH. Raise the pH of your soil by sowing in lime. Use 40 pounds of lime per 1,000 square feet of soil.

5. Sow grass seed into the area. Rye grass will grow quickly and thickly in this soil. Add a thin layer of potting soil over the top of the seeds, about ½ to 1 inch thick.

6. Mist the area daily, watering the seeds until they grow.

Chair Pads for Elegant Home Decor

You will be amazed to know that your selection for chair pads can make or mar the whole home decor. If you haven't selected the right kind of chair pad then you will land up in having the wrong home decoration that will give a chaotic & disorganized look. So just do not buy them but think about the theme of your entire decor and then select them.

Chair pads are used above the sitting and used for comfort. So you will find dining room chair pads, rocking chair pads, high chair pads, outdoor chair pads et at. All these types of chair pads cushions are further quilted and embroidered or printed in classical to traditional and contemporary style to give a chisel look.

Market is full of various kinds of fabrics from which these chair pads cushions are made. You can easily find cotton chair pads that are embroidered to give a very sophisticated look. Polyester fiber that has the maximum durability is also used to make chair pads. Besides this there are always other options like silk, linen, jute and glaze cotton for this textile furnishing item. Styles and designs of these fancy looking chair pads must be alluring. So you will find many designs ranging from floral patterns, lovely plaids to animals, cartoon characters.

There are also reversible kinds of these chair pads. With these you can instantly change the decor of your home. Chair pads comes either with the ties or have anti-slip fabric at the bottom. So always look for these features while buying any kind of chair pad. Like if you are purchasing the high chair pad for your kid's chair then it is must to have ties so that it does not slip. To buy an outdoor chair pad look for the fabric that goes well with the outdoor furniture and withstand these elements. Also prefer to buy machine washed and easy to clean type of chair pad.

Some dining chair pads are filled with thick foams to make them extra comfortable. If you are looking for dining chair pads then find the one having filling of polywool or hollow fibers as these are very soft and does not break like foam. Also these are easy to wash and retain the shape. You can also look for polyester fiberfill that is polymer-coated. With this cushion gets anti-resistant quality against mold, mildew and fading.

So if comfort and style are your key to home decor then quality chair pads are magna cum laude to buy.

~Monday Inspiration and a Sneak Peek~

There are still 2 days left to enter my giveaway with CSN stores.

We are in the process of re-arranging a few bedrooms upstairs in order to create a family games/computer room. With 2 teenagers and a tween, a space for them to hang out with friends is in order. My son is excited to move his bedroom into the space we now have as our office. It is the smallest room in the house but that doesn't deter my son from wanting it as his room. I will have to pare down some furniture and be creative in the placement but am excited to have a blank slate to work with. I want to use the furniture he currently has maybe re-painting a few pieces. Right now I am collecting inspiration photos as a starting point for his room. We are leaning towards using blue walls, not sure if we are going to go pale or really dark. I love red and would love to incorporate his red desk along with some new crisp white bedding.

Here are some photos I have in my inspirational files of some amazing boys rooms.

So many inspirational photos, so many ideas. I will need to sit down with my son and find out what he wants. Hopefully we can come to some agreement and get the ball rolling!

But here is a sneak peek....

at the diamond tufted headboard I finally finished for my daughter's room. I am in the process of writing up a tutorial (it ended up being harder than I thought - lots of sweat and patience) and hope to have it up in the next few days!
