The first thing you will have to work on is the focal point in the room. This is the most important and eye-catching piece in the room, the main feature. It should be the first thing you see in the room and something that is enjoyable to look at. For example, a pretty picture or a large window would be a good focal point. If you do not have a focal point in a room, you can create one by adding a pretty book shelf, cabinet, table, or an interesting mirror.

When you choose wallpapers and fabrics for your pieces in the room, you can choose coordinating colors and patterns. This gives the room a very complete look, and makes it look professional. Try to make the patterns different sizes like big, medium and small so that they match but it does not look overdone. Textured fabrics also add an element to the room. Make sure to choose colors and patterns that please the eye and that you like.

While it is important for a room to match, sometimes having the same style in the whole room can be boring. So try to change the style of the room in one part of the room, like the center. If everything matches, add in an extra piece that is out of the theme. For example, a modern coffee table in the middle of a traditional room. A splash of color in a white room or a set of stripes in a plain room, anything can break the pattern a little bit.

Coordinating style and function is very important. Finding places to store your items is important in every room. Corners that are empty can be filled with a cabinet which will be stylish and useful to keep things in. You can put covers on tables in order to hide containers or magazines. You can also get a rolling box to put under the bed to store old clothes, books, or plates.

Sometimes it is fun to change the style up a bit and make the decor of a room seasonal। You can choose to have two different pillow covers, one for the first half of the year, and another for the latter half. You can also get reversible drapes to switch every season or so. You can change centerpieces with the season like sunflowers for summer, fruits and leaves for autumn, pine cones for winter and potted lilies for spring.

A first consideration is what materials will be used in your child's room. At first it may be ‘cute’ to create a room that will be a totally dedicated nursery for the new baby. This room will usually consist of pale pastel colors and delicate lacey fabrics. But what happens as the baby grows older, and becomes a toddler? Suddenly those pastel colors of pink, blue, yellow and green and delicate fabrics of silky cottons may no longer be practical to the one who must take care of the room.

So instead, when designing a room for that little one, a certain amount of “thinking and planning ahead” is required. Part of this “planning ahead’ means whatever you bring into the room that it be easy to care for, i.e. washable and durable, and can be easily changed as the child grows older and his/her tastes changes. Some teenagers will in all probability not want the frilly curtains, or a pastel bedspread.

Storage is another factor to be considered। Babies grow out of his/her clothes, they also accumulate these clothes plus other items, such as shoes, and accessories, so that storing these items can over time present an ever growing problem. How much closet space is available in the room? How much closet space is going to be required? Is the room big enough to house a child’s toy box. Will the room easily be able to incorporate built in’s , and if so, where will these go in the room? Department stores and home supply stores devote entire sections to the subject of room storage. Here modular units and cubicles can be found that provide an endless arrangement of ideas. Racks and shelving for closets also offer endless possibilities. And this is why a preliminary “planned” layout of the room is essential before installing any storage saving devices.

Creating a Beautiful Rental Home: Tip 1 ~

I love to read decor magazines and blogs. They are so full of inspiring ideas yet there are times I feel a pang of envy. We don't own our current home and are renting until we find the right home for our budget. We have moved 5 times, twice across the continent from one coast to another and between countries. We have rented more homes than we have owned due to our moving every few years.

Over the years I have learned that even though I can't knock out walls, renovate a kitchen, tear our carpet I can still create a beautiful home within the constraints of renting. I must admit that I can't wait until I can tear up, knock down and redo a house to my liking. In the meantime I am trying to be content with our lot in life and do the best I can. Sometimes being restricted in what you can do to a home can really bring out the creativity. Over the years I have learned a thing or two and would like to share my ideas. (I wish my photos of past homes were digital, I could then show you what I have done in past homes)

I have decided to create a mini-series of some do's and don'ts in creating a design saavy home while renting. Stay tuned over the next week as I share what I have learned over the years.

TIP #1
Don't hesitate in painting the walls. Just because you are renting doesn't mean you can't invest a little. Paint doesn't cost a lot and you get great results. Don't forget it is the home you live in, even though it is temporary you need to make it your own. But make sure you have the OK from the landlords (or you can paint the colours to your liking and then paint back before you move) Another idea is if the walls are white you can add punches of colour in your accessories, art work and drapery. I will be discussing those topics in the next few posts. Stay tuned!

Before -  ugly paint colour and light fixture in the living/dining room....

....after!

Family room in all it's peachy glory...

...after with a fresh coat of paint.

Master bedroom - more peach....

...after with a lovely shade of grey-blue.

Don't be afraid to roll up those sleeves, grab a can of paint in a colour you love and create a room you will enjoy to be in.
