Cliff Dwelling House by OSLA ARCHITECT

Another OSLA ARCHITECT DESIGN that called Cliff Wdelling House

The site of the new home for customer childhood home, located on the water in Gig Harbor. Through a process of mitigation, customers were able to cut into a 25-foot high cliff and build a new house in the cliff and directly on the waterfront.



































The structure was built with materials that age gracefully and require little maintenance, as a sod roof, copper trim, cedar siding, and concrete.






















The new work consists of a 2000-square-foot residence and a 800-square-foot boathouse, with a living space outdoors between the two. This compound is connected directly to a private dock, the owner access to the collection of vessels.

Located in a semi-arid coniferous forest in the eastern part of Washington, the home is essentially a collection of wooden boxes attached springing three stones thrown that the natural bridge undulations of a hill. Designed for a family, the house is deliberately informal in its presentation and in the use of interior finishes.



















































Inside, the spaces are open and interconnected. The kitchen, dining and living rooms are essentially of a large space with floor-to-ceiling windows, the rooms are grouped in a less open part of the house. A small, detached wooden box lined serves as a home office and is the only concession to privacy.

Best on a Writer's House | By Gianni Botsford's

Gianni Botsford architect and his company aimed to "create an architecture of adaptation at the local level; The climate, environment and culture. "Their approach, according to their website, is to avoid falling into the preconceived solutions to design problems through a process of detailed analysis of the site and briefly before any design phase, and have experience in many sectors and at every level-the master plan of product design. They work with a wide range of consultants, education, and collaborations with architects, artisans and artists, to broaden the outlook of the studio.

Located on a beach route of the Caribbean coast,Casa Kike is a home of a writer. Specifically, the architect's father. A house designed as a retreat for him, he had to accommodate its 16,000 collection of books. In combination with his environment, he has created a unique challenge for Botsford.

The collection of books suggested layout and interior solutions. Then, the techniques have been combined with modern technology and design in a lightweight structure of wood covered with sheets of metal and glass face at both ends.

The building is composed of two pavilions in the form of parallel, sitting pretty elevated 1.2 meters high. In response to the tropical environment of Costa Rica with its high levels of sunlight and rain, Botsford using detail analysis software environment, and culture, using local building techniques and equipment.

Because of this, the roof has become the main element of the design. The mere parallelogram which has been developed is relative to the sun, in order to ensure full shade all day, yet open to the front and back to allow the breeze naturally cool the house. All the trees were maintained with the home forged between them.

Of course, the building is not without its share of "problems". Botsford's father, as a creator himself, felt that it might make changes to its whim. Pointing out to him that the architect of the customer relationship is a bit like that shared between the writer and editor, with the constant changes in a text, it ends.

Knowledge About Passive House

Question: What is a Passivehouse?

Answer: First of all, the most graphic description: I live in a 90 square meter, three-room apartment in the Passivehouse. In 2006, I have paid 188 EUR for all the heat energy, that is for heating the house, for heating the water (but not for the water itself) and for the gas for cooking. We pay this amount not per month, but for the whole year! It is clear that, one can save around 1000 EUR per year by living in a passivehouse rather than living in a new conventional house.

Definition of Passivehouse

There are two widespread descriptions:

  1. A passivehouse is a passively heated house, thus there is no active heating system like a central heating system. The sun, isolation, inner gains and such suffice to keep the temperature in the house at a comfortable level during the winter.

  2. A Passivehouse has a heating energy consumption under 15 kWh per square meter per year (not including warm water, electricity and so on.)

How will a Passivehouse be constructed?












A construction engineer of a passivehouse must as a general rule, incorporate five important "elements" or basic interrelations:

  1. A very good heat insulation:
    In modern new buildings, the architects, owners, stress analysts and house technicians already have to deal with heat insulation. In most cases, 12 to 16 cm heat insulation is adequate, for example from mineral wool, expanded polystyrene (a brand name is Styropor), cork or cellulose flakes (old paper). The strength of these isolation measures is usually doubled in passive houses.

  2. Very good windows:
    Without the great improvement in window engineering technology in the last 10 years, passivehouses would not have been feasible or would not have been as cost-effective. We use triple-glazed windows. These windows are also special because two of the six glass surfaces are coated with heat-reflective material.

  3. South orientation
    An often underestimated factor is the areal orientation of the buildings in the territory: A big facade of the passivehouse must face south, the principal axis of the houses also may not lie from north to south, but east to west. Because of the 4 big linden trees in front of the house, Fraunhofer-Institute for Solar Energy Systems had to carry out a computer simulation, which could give us assurance that the passivehouse would still function.

  4. The Ventilation System
    When the walls, the windows, the floor and the spreads are very well heat-insulated, biggest heat-loss occurs via ventilation (also the natural air change through leakages). Normally, heat loss through air makes up only around 10-20% of the total heat loss. However, minimizing the heat loss via air is very important in passivehouses. While doing this, one must also make sure that there is enough fresh air to breathe in the house. In order to achieve this, as a general rule, one needs mechanical ventilation, ventilators and a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger makes sure that the air in the rooms is exchanged every two hours and that the exiting air delivers its warmth to the entering air. Thereby, 80% of the heat loss via air is eliminated, the warmth stays in the house. A convenient secondary effect of this system is that there is no mold problem in the passivehouses; passivehouses are compulsorily very good aired. On the other hand, the air flow is so weak that one can not get a feeling of infiltration or cooling.

  5. Inner Returns (Internal gains)
    The so called "inner returns" are certainly not direct gains but gains that one thinks about while constructing a passivehouse. While cooking, showering and using electrical devices, one adds to the warmth in the house which helps to keep the inner temperature at a warmer degree. We, as humans also emit around 100 Watt heat energy per person.

    For comparison: A 15 meter square room in the house with huge windows, (when it is 12 °C outside), has a maximum heating need of around 400 Watt. On the coldest days of the year, two people and four candles alone will suffice to stoke the room.

On top of a hill, a part of what once was a historical park, is a black box that peaks the curiosity of anyone passing by. Émergeant of dense black forest as a rock, it is drawing international attention with its absolute and with a volume of lines and color: House T by the German architect Wolfgang Feyferlik and Austrian architect Susi Fritzer.

In fact, the box is stronger than the dark-colored glass. Enclosed by transparent on three sides, the only solid wall outside the home. Clad, and the roof, black PVC, it made a great contrast with the rest of the materials in construction, and the lush green surroundings. Even in winter, when snow fills the landscape, the house looks like a solid rock away.

Built half of what was originally planned by the owners, the precise conception of the house at one level, thus avoiding ruin the view from the surrounding area. The design of the interior includes a large central space, devoid of any structural elements, with the roof of suspension.

The connection with the surrounding environment is more obvious than most buildings: having kept every single tree of the park intact, the house even incorporates one within its open areas, through its roof. Also, the slope of the roof does not end in a gutter, but lets rainwater fall gently on to the black wall, looking like a waterfall.

Balanced on the spine of a rocky ridge, the linear house threads through a grove of arbutus. As you move through the house, the exposed rafters gradually invert into a butterfly roof opening to bring light and views into the main social areas.

































































The rhythm and movement of the roof structure is subtle but the spatial mood changes dramatically from enclosed and protective at the entrance to open and expansive in the living and dining rooms.

A Romantic NATURAL Parlor
The parlor is, by contrast, perhaps the most formal room chez Hoffman. “When Traci and I first started out, she lived in California. I sent her irises and the iris became her favorite flower. Hence, this room is purple and you see all the iris pictures,” Monty says.
